How Hard Must We Work to Achieve God?

Translated by Zain-ull-Abiddin Daniyal

How Hard Must We Work to Achieve God? An excerpt from a sermon of Hazrat Musleh Maud (ra).
Allah the exalted says: يٰۤاَيُّهَا الْاِنْسَانُ اِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ اِلٰى رَبِّكَ كَدْحًا فَمُلٰقِيْهِۚ
Thou, O man, verily must labour [kad-h کدح] to reach your Lord. [84:7]
The meaning of the word كدح [Kad-ḥ] is diligent and extreme hard work – such hard work that causes the human body to start becoming weak. In our culture it is referred to as ہڈیاں گھل گیئں [bones have melted/dissolved]. When such a condition is met, it is said that the individual has done كدح [kad-ḥ]. The real meaning of كدح [kad-ḥ] is of something to penetrate into a thing…
Allah the Exalted says: يٰۤاَيُّهَا الْاِنْسَانُ اِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ اِلٰى رَبِّكَ كَدْحًا فَمُلٰقِيْهِۚ۰۰
O man, you will have to work so hard and exert so much effort that your bones start to dissolve and only then will you have the opportunity to have the honour of meeting your Lord. Then, when such a hardworking person reaches that stage, he will be given his good works on his right hand as an indication that his کدح [kadḥ] was genuine and his efforts were complete.
